Situated at 2285m above the sea level, Thimphu is the capital and largest city of Bhutan. It is situated in the western central part of Bhutan. This Himalayan city was built by late King Jigme Dorje Wangchuk in order to replace the ancient capital city of Punakha in1955 and in the year 1961 Thimphu was declared as the capital of the Kingdom of Bhutan by the 3rd Druk King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Thimphu is the most modern city in Bhutan with an abundance of restaurants, internet cafes, nightclubs and shopping centres.

There are several attractions in Thimphu such as the National Post Office, the Clock Tower Square, the Motithang Takin Preserve, Tango and Chari Monasteries, Buddha Dordenma, National Memorial Chorten, Centenary Farmer’s Market, Semtokha Dzong to name a few. These form the most important tourist attractions in the capital city. Serene and peaceful with its streets dotted with traditional shop fronts. Beautiful textiles in wool silk and cotton, basketwork, silver jewelry, thangkas and other traditional crafts of the kingdom are available in various Handicrafts Emporiums.
