Overview

Annapurna I (8,091 m) is located on the Annapurna massif of the Himalayas, in North-central Nepal. Annapurna I is the 10th highest mountain peak in the world. Annapurna is a Sanskrit name that can be translated as Goddess of the Harvests or more simply the Provider.

The mountain has glaciers on its western and northwestern slopes, which drain into this gorge. Four summits make up Annapurna with the entire massif forming a barrier on the northern side of the Pokhara Valley in Nepal. The main summit stands to the west of the Annapurna Sanctuary. The major peaks on the Annapurna range is Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna II (7,937 m), Annapurna III (7,555 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), Gangapurna (7,455 m) and Annapurna South (7,219 m).

The mountain was climbed by Maurice Herzog and L. Lachenal on June 3 1550 for the first time. It takes about 20 years to attempt this mountain again. Chris Bonington’s team in 1970 ascended via the South Face of Annapurna and Two American women-Irene Miller and Vira Komarkova, have reached the summit via the North Face in October 1978.

However, all the routes to Mt. Annapurna I are quite difficult and this is the reason very fewer climbers have attempted the summit to date as compared to other 8,000 m peaks in Nepal. The dangling seracs (big blocks of ice) and the avalanches fall on its slopes every day between camp I and camp II. The routes are steeply straightforward and we require fixed ropes for each camp. Although it is relatively easier from camp II to camp III with zigzag crossing and gradually climbing, we will require approximately 1300 – 1500m of fixed rope. However, a fixed rope is generally not required from camp III to the summit.
