Nepal, a country of sublime beauty, tucked away in the shades of the highest mountain range in the world, can truly be known as the ‘last paradise’ on earth. Even in such a small area of 1,47,181 sq. kilometers, Nepal presents a myriad of attractions ranging from its scenic beauty of the Himalayan Mountains and well preserved exotic culture to the adventure opportunities in every nook and cranny in the country. There are many lakes of religious significance, out of which Bhairav Kund is one of them. Bhairav Kund trekking has been recently discovered and is very popular for being full of wilderness and adventure.
Bhairab Kund in ancient Sanskrit language means ‘holy lake’ named after the destructive image of Lord Shiva, who is also popularly known by the name of Bhairav. The place is located at an altitude of 4,250m to the northeast of Kathmandu close to the Panch Pokhari at the Nepal-Tibet border. The starting point for the trek is Jalbire in the Araniko Highway.
The settlements along the trekking route that we visit belong to Newars, Gurungs, and Sherpas ethnic groups of people. Here, observe their different ways of life, culture and intermingle with the local people. While on trek you enjoy the dramatic landscape, terraced fields, and an excellent view of the Rolwaling range, Gaurishankar Himal, Langtang Himal, Boudha Himal, Jugal Himal, and Tibetan mountain peaks from north to east.
Bhairab Kund is visited by many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims during a religious festival which is held every year during the full moon day in the month of mid-August.
Jalbire, a small rural town, is the trekking start point. It is located on the riverbank of Bhotekhola. Here, you can experience the “Newari” ethnic culture and traditional lifestyle of the local people. On completion of the trek, we drive back to Kathmandu from Larche or you can combine the rafting trip at Bhote Koshi River on the way back to Kathmandu.
