Overview
Langtang region is one of the closest trekking destinations from Kathmandu, located in the north-central Himalayas at the border between Nepal and Tibet. It is considered to be the third popular trekking destination after Annapurna and Everest regions in Nepal. Any traveler can make easy access to explore some of the most beautiful treks in the Langtang region. We will drive to Syabrubesi and then begin our trek the next morning passing through various scattered villages and fields of barley, wheat, and maize. The trail soon turns eastward, cross the Langtang Khola and continue our trek gently climbing up the Langtang valley through an excellent forest of rhododendron, chirr, and blue pine. You will enjoy the spectacular scenery around and soon start to take on a different feel, becoming much steeper as the trail meanders between steep gorges and high wooded slopes.
The region is also popular for having first Nepal’s Himalayan national park and the country’s fourth protected area. The name of the Park is Langtang National Park founded in 1976 with an area of 1,710 km2 (660 sq mi). Langtang’s widespread high meadows provide summer habitat for numerous species of animals like Musk deer and Himalayan Tahr. The park is also famous for the red panda, Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, wild dog, ghoral, serow, and more than 250 species of birds. Autumn ( from mid-Sept to Nov) is the best time to visit the Park. With the advent of Spring ( April- May) bursts of red, pink, and white rhododendrons stretch into the towering canopy of fir and oak forests. The summer makes the Yak and Chauri herds ascend to a higher elevation, making temporary camps in the pasturelands. From June to August, skies are loaded with monsoon rains. During August, a lively festival at Gosaikunda Lake attracts thousands of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims from different parts of Nepal, and September witnesses’ spectacular display of wildflowers, while livestock herds, once again, return to lower pastures.
The region is dominated by some of the popular peaks such as Langtang Lirung (7,246 m) in the north, Gang Chenpo (6,388 m) to the south, and Dorje Lakpa (6,975m) to the east. From the highpoint of the trek at Kyanjin Gompa (3,800m) you can make an excursion around to scale small.
peaks and observe spectacular Himalayan mountain views. Langtang has over 70 glaciers of varying sizes, the Langtang and Ganesh Himal mountain ranges, and high-altitude lakes including Gosainkunda, Parvatikunda, Bhairavkunda, and Dudhkunda. Tamang Heritage Trek and scenic Langtang valley with the holy lakes at Gosainkunda, Ganjala pass, and the spectacular Helambu valley are the major trekking destinations for both nature lovers and adventurers. All these treks offer a choice of moderate to more difficult hiking with a duration ranging from 3 days to 3 weeks.
All the Langtang-bound treks are rated somewhere between moderate and difficult. You’ll have to walk for around 5-6 hrs daily to reach from one destination to another for a night halt. However, you need to walk 6-7 hrs round trip at a very higher altitude, to reach the famous Tserko Ri (5000 m) above Kyanjin. It is an ideal region if you are short on time but still want to enjoy trekking in the Himalayas and experience the wonderful cultures of the native people.
