Overview

Manaslu is the eighth highest peak in the world at 8,163 m above sea level. It is located about forty miles east of Annapurna I The name Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa and can be roughly translated as Mountain of the Spirit. Climbing Mt. Manaslu is by far challenging. The expedition trail to Manaslu Base Camp is scenically and culturally most spectacular, passing through villages, valleys, rivers, and meadows.

Manaslu offers several routes to climbers just because of having topographically favorable long ridges and glacier valleys along the route. There need four camps in the approach of the Manaslu peak. There will be a few stretches of steep climbing and crevasses from Camp I to Camp II, slippery snow climbing starts from Camp II to Camp III and avalanches are a threat from Camp III to Camp IV before the summit. Well, preparation and climbing experience is required to make the summit successful.

The first survey of the peak was made by a Japanese expedition in 1952 and the first summit was made by the Japanese team in 1956. Manaslu has always been known as a ‘Japanese mountain’ and Japanese mountaineers since it was attempted to the top.
